Jonathan Silver

Jonathan Silver is a professor at the Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield. Prior to joinging the faculty at the University of Sheffield, Jonathan earned a PhD in geography at Durham University and worked at the London School of Economics and Durham University. His research focuses on the uneven ways in which infrastructure has come to be planned, operationalized and experienced. This work has taken him to a range of cities across both the Global North and the Global South, and he has generated a postcolonial mode of theorizing these networks, paying attention to the ways in which finance, urban politics, everyday interactions and visions of futurity come to shape the infrastructural terrain. Over the next few years, he will be leading a European Research Council project, GlobalCORRIDOR, investigating the role of new infrastructure corridors in shaping the urbanization process and inequality in a series of global regions. He is also part of a team examining how agglomeration economics have shaped the transformation of UK cities in recent years.
