Sophie Buhnik

Sophie Buhnik is a researcher and associate member of the CRIA team (Centre de Recherche sur les Réseaux, l’Industrie et l’Aménagement – Center for Research into Networks, Industry and Planning) within the Géographie-cités mixed research unit (UMR CNRS 8504), where she completed her PhD thesis under the joint supervision of Natacha Aveline and Sylvie Fol. She had previously worked on projects to develop the Paris region for DATAR (Délégation Interministérielle à l’Aménagement du Territoire et à l’Attractivité Régionale – Interministerial Delegation for Land Planning and Regional Attractiveness).

Her research focuses on changes in mobility and the conditions for access to urban resources in significantly aging peripheral communities in Japanese urban areas, and more particularly in the Osaka–Kyoto–Kobe conurbation. She is a graduate of Inalco (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales – French National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations) and was the editor-in-chief of Japan Analysis (a journal devoted to Japanese current affairs) from 2011 to 2016.
