John J. Betancur is a professor of urban planning at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA), with a focus on international community development and political economy. His is the co‑author of Claiming Neighborhood : New Ways of Understanding Urban Change (with Janet Smith ; University of Illinois Press, 2016) ; Reinventing Race, Reinventing Racism (co‑edited with Cedric Herring ; Brill, 2012) ; and The Collaborative City : Opportunities and Struggles for Blacks and Latinos in US Cities (co‑edited with Douglas Gills ; Garland, 2000).
